GENERAL INFORMATION
When is the Kelso Highlander festival? The second full weekend of September every year. In 2026, that is Saturday, September 12th, and Sunday, September 13th.
How much does it cost to attend? Nothing. The Kelso Highlander Festival is always 100% free to attend. Free admission. Free parking. Free entertainment. We intend for it to always stay that way, too.
Is the festival family-friendly? Absolutely. The Kelso Highlander Festival is one of the most family-friendly events in the Pacific Northwest. Children of all ages are welcome. Bring the whole family!
Can I bring my dog? Yes, however, all dogs need to be leashed at all times.
Will the festival happen if it rains? Yes. Rain or Shine. The Highland Dance stage is covered. Come prepared for Pacific Northwest Weather.
GETTING THERE
Where is Tam O'Shanter Park? Tam O'Shanter Way, Kelso, WA, 98626, right off Interstate 5 at Exit 39. We are less than an hour north of Portland, OR, and two hours from Seattle, WA. Directional signage is posted from the freeway exit during the festival weekend.
Is the parking free? Yes. Free parking is available on site. Arrive early on Saturday for the best spots.
Is there public transportation? Kelso is served by local transit. Amtrak also stops in Kelso, approximately 1 mile from Tam O'Shanter Park.
AT THE FESTIVAL
What can I expect to see and do? A full two-day celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture, including:
Scottish Highland Heavy Games (caber toss, stone put, hammer throw, sheaf toss, weight over bar)
Highland Dance Competition
Live Celtic music — Beltaine, Wicked Tinkers & more
Pipe bands · Parade of Clans · Saturday Parade around Three Rivers Crossing into Tam O'Shanter Park
Beer Garden by Ashtown Brewing Co.
Food & craft vendors · Clan tents · Silent Auction
Kelso Garden Club Flower Show
Should I bring a chair? Yes. We strongly recommend that you do. Some seating is available, but the festival draws large crowds.
Is there food available? Yes. Food vendors and the Ashtown Brewing Co. Beer Garden are on-site through both days.
COMPETING & PARTICIPATING
How do I register for the Highland Games? Athlete registration forms are on our Forms page. Complete and return with payment by the listed deadline. Questions? Use our Contact Us page
How do I register for the Highland Dance Competition? Dance registration forms are on our Forms page. Divisions run from Primary (under 7) through Premier. Return your form with payment by the deadline.
How do I become a vendor, sponsor, or volunteer? Application forms are on our Forms page. For sponsorship inquiries or volunteering, contact us through the Contact Us page or message us on Facebook @highlanderfestival. Space is limited — apply early.
Can my clan have a tent at the festival? Absolutely — the Avenue of Clans is one of the most beloved parts of the festival. Reach out through our Contact Us page for space and registration details
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Who runs the Kelso Highlander Festival? The festival is city-sponsored by the City of Kelso and enshrined in the city charter, but organized and run entirely by dedicated community volunteers. No paid staff. Just people who love Kelso, its traditions, and heritage.
Why is Kelso, WA, connected to Scotland? Kelso, WA was founded in 1884 by Peter W. Crawford, a Scottish surveyor born near Kelso, Scotland. He named his new city after the hometown he never forgot. Visit our about page for more of the story.
